Poppy appeal cyclists make Peterborough stop-over
Peterborough Mayoress Mrs Beryl Burton today (Tuesday 4 July) waved off David Foulkes, 64, as he resumed a 300-mile sponsored cycle ride in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal after an overnight stop in Peterborough.
David, a former Royal Engineer, is aiming to cycle from his home in Hunstanton to Tamworth and back in an endeavour to bring the total he has raised since 2001 to £10,000. He is accompanied on the seven-day journey by Philip Beavon.
Their route will include a visit to Whittington Barracks, near Lichfield, where David joined the Army and will climax when he lays a wreath to fallen comrades at the National Arboretum.
"I have been raising money for charity with sponsored cycling and walking efforts since 1982," said David, who now works in the catering industry. "Some people have suggested it's time for me to take it easy but I am determined to keep going."
He estimates he has covered a total of 5,000 miles and raised more than £21,000 in total so far. His biggest challenge to date was a 1,500-mile cycle ride from John O'Groats to Land's End and home to Hunstanton, which raised £1,500 for the Royal National Life-Boat Institute. A 300-mile trip to London and back raised £2,250 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
